Designing a website is always an exciting challenge for every designer. There is no defined rule for making a website’s design. It always depends on your requirements. Your deigning choices will be according to the site in which you are going to publish. Whether they are personal sites, entertaining sites, blogs, and corporate sites etc. every site has different set of guidelines that you need to follow. These guidelines can be in term of content or the presentation of the content on the website. At the end, it will mostly depend on the visitors that will log on to the particular site. Reacting according to audience is the best thing that any designer can do.
Do’s and Don’ts of Successful Web Design
There are several Dos and Don’ts that a designer should be aware of before creating a website. Visitors are always linked to the words that you put on your website. The point that matters the most is how you place those words in front of the people to make them stay for a long time on your website. When visitors find useful contents on your website, they always come back for more. No matter how much good your skills are in designing but if you have made a website that is low in providing the usability to the visitor, you are certainly missing the core concept of website designing. Therefore, in today’s post we are going to share some Dos and Don’ts of the website designing that every designer should remember.
DO: Structure The Website with Grid Layouts
Grid layouts are a great way to structure your website and keep the visitors attached with site. There are plenty of grid layouts that are recently released and can be utilized for your website structure. You can always add your creative designing stuff on the website after it is properly structured with grid layouts.
DON’T: Disorder your Website
Websites full of boxes that are very poorly managed, not lined properly, and are of different sizes and shapes are the best example of dreadful websites. The very first thing that designers learn in to keep the website properly structured. Don’t disorder your website or you will lose all the hard work you did in making the website.
DO: Keep Focus on Main Purpose
Your focus should always be on the main purpose of your website. Whether you are creating a website for selling business products or for entertainment, remember to have complete focus on the homepage. However, you can always add the call to action on the inner pages for any item. Keeping your attention on the main purpose will make your visitors to be attached on the website for a long time.
DON’T: Use Unrelated Ads on Website
When you decide to make some money from your website or blog, don’t place unrelated ads on your web. Using excessive ads is also not recommended. I understand that every wants to earn as much money as they can from their websites but, believe me when your web page has more ads than the content, nobody would like to visit it. Don’t make your ads the most prominent part of the webpage because what’s the point of ads if no one is going to visit your site? The best way is to mix up the ads so that people can focus on the content first.
DO: Pick a Color Scheme
When you understand the audience of your website and know their feelings, only than you will be able to pick the right color scheme for your website. Visit some of the websites that you think will be same as yours and carefully examine what colors they are using. Light colors such as; light green are in trend these days and many designers are using it. However, you should always pick the color scheme according to your website design.
DON’T: Use too Many Colors
If you think that trying too many colors will give a unique look to your website, than you are totally wrong. Using almost every color available will make your website look shocking to the visitors and will give them a perfect reason to leave your site. You should have a beautiful mixture of colors in your website. If you find it difficult to pick the right colors, there are several websites that provide user generated color schemes to help you in website creation. Pick out the best scheme with no more than five colors and you will see your design look much better.
DO: Choosing your Words
Words are always important to any website. You should focus on the copywriting miby making your words short and to the point. Hiring a copywriter is also another option for you. Writing is one of the most important elements in web designing. By selecting the right words for your writing, you can ensure a good sign-up rate on your website. Carefully choose the words when you are making page headings, sign-up buttons, navigation items, and call to actions etc.
DON’T: Fill the Page with Keywords
Always make sure that your writing doesn’t look robotic. Readers find it annoying when the paragraph is full of keywords. When the article is full of keywords, it will make a bad impression on the readers and will result in lost of the trust. Your writing should always look natural to the readers and if using keywords is necessary, use them where they really fit in the article.
DO: Make Navigation Simple and Readable
You should always keep your site’s navigation simple and readable for the visitor. Navigation is used to take the user from one page to another so, if you place it in a spot where it is not noticeable than what’s the point of having it? Make your navigation on the top of your website so that everyone can easily see it and go to different pages on your site.
DON’T: Make your Site without a Search Box
Visitors don’t have enough time to look through every page in search of their required content. If they don’t find a search box, they will leave the site without wasting any time. Having a search box makes the visitors feel comfortable and in control which is obviously good for your site. Placing a search box on the upper right corner is preferred most by the visitors because; they are used to it being displayed on the right side of the web page.
DO: Carefully Select the Fonts and Sizes
Typography is a very important part in web designing. You should choose attractive fonts that give a unique experience to the reader while your section titles should also be of accurate size. Many web designers use a single font as the main font in all the contents and change the fonts in the title of the pages to give a different and natural look to the site.
DON’T: Use a New Font and Size for Every Element
This is a very big mistake that some designers do. Having a page title, content, navigation links, and sidebar in different fonts and sizes will make the website look unattractive and will put a label of never to return on the visitors mind. Choose a main font and size for your content and other elements; however a different font and size can be used for the page title.
DO: Make an Eye-Catching Page
Make your webpage visually attractive because, it is the first thing that visitors see when they log on to the site. The first impression is sometimes the last impression so make it count. Use beautiful textures to give your site a pleasant look. Carefully analyse your site’s purpose and choose nice looking textures, images and graphics to put on your webpage.
DON’T: Trick Yourself
If you think adding different images and graphics will play the trick for you, then it is your mistake. People now don’t expect a website to look like funky anymore. The more professional your site looks, the more visitors you are going to get. No doubt people loved every style of website in the old days but, it’s not old days anymore. If you are a professional designer, your website should speak about your work. Balance your website equally with all the elements to get a professional and attractive looking website.
